Great Fun - But Probably Not Aimed at My Age Group!
I eagerly unwrapped the smart Lego box and was delighted to find it was suitable for those aged 8+ - it sounded right up my street!
Following the plans, I quickly assembled the castle/game and was pleased with how rapidly I was able to follow the instructions. When a friend pointed out that I am in fact fifty years old, I confess it took the sheen off my pleasure.
All joking aside I'd comment that Lego has moved on since I first opened a box some 40-odd years ago, but this has been a necessarily evolution as the company strives to maintain a share of the marketplace. Kids these days are more savvy and exposed to all manner of competing attractions. Can a plastic toy still enchant and enthral like it did in the mid-late 1960s? Not being 8-12 (possibly the age group the makers are aiming for) I can't comment, but I must confess that I enjoyed the time I spent with it. Hopefully, the fact that it features characters from one of the most popular book series' of all time will give it more credibility with the pre-teen generation.
So, this is a toy, albeit updated, from a more innocent age. The game itself may be a bit too basic perhaps for those weaned on the likes of Wii and PlayStation, but the sheer tactile joy of assembling the plastic pieces will surely put a smile on many a young `un's face. I found the whole experience rather charming, even if I am a bit older than its target audience.
I'm not meant to give away or dispose of any Amazon Vine products I've ordered, however, on this occasion, I hope they won't mind me giving this to a local children's ward where I'm sure it will provide many hours of entertainment.
A lovely product that brought back happy memories.
Just like Labyrinth
I can't praise this game enough! I have two children aged 5 and 7 and despite the age guidance of 8 years + they both love playing it and we have had several games already. Both of my girls are avid fans of the game labyrinth, and this is very similar with a lego twist. If you haven't played labyrinth and like board games I would warmly recommend you buy that one as well. You roll a dice and move the walls of the Hogwarts castle about in an attempt to collect pieces for your homework. Strategy plays a part because you can move the pieces both to help yourself and delay your opponents. The board is well designed and well made and you can recognise the characters and the pieces look like magic.
On top of all of this making the castle was great fun. And as it is lego it lets you make changes and make up your own rules.
In summary: great to play and great to build, warmly recommended.
An amusing diversion but ultimately a Labyrinth rip-off
Expanding ever outwards into new frontiers, Lego's latest venture is a series of simple board games that, unsurprisingly, you first build up and then play. The Harry Potter entry in the list is a small and simple game that echoes old classic Labyrinth, with players guiding their Lego wizards through an ever-shifting maze in an attempt to gather all their homework and make it back to the common room.
As with any Lego product, construction is intended to be half the fun, although anyone with any experience of the trickier Harry Potter sets will make short work of this one. Once assembled, the board forms a simple 4x4 maze with pieces that can be moved or rotated to help you or obstruct your opponents. The basic rules call for you to move from your common room to four different classrooms to pick up your homework, before returning to claim victory. In what seems a bit of a cop out, the game then encourages you to extend it by making up your own rules, although in if you're playing for laughs then it's easy enough to think of ridiculous new variations on gameplay.
All in all, although this is an enjoyable little game that will no doubt appeal to younger players, the big kids among us will be left feeling nostalgic for the original Labyrinth, which remains far superior to Lego's cash-in attempt.
